Actor Patrick Swayze denies cancer deathbed rumours

Patrick Swayze has rubbished tabloid gossip that claimed his battle with pancreatic cancer has left him at death's door.

The Dirty Dancing actor said inaccurate newspaper stories about his health were "the only thorn in my side" as he returned home for Christmas having filmed police drama series The Beast.

The 56-year-old was diagnosed with the disease in March with initial tabloid reports suggesting he had just weeks to live.

However, his physician Dr George Fisher soon dismissed the rumours and said Swayze had shown an "excellent" response to the treatment.

But US tabloids recently alleged the star's life was in jeopardy with the National Enquirer claiming the disease had spread to his liver while the Globe emblazoned their frontpage with the headline "Swayze Deathbed Secret".

In a statement issued to People magazine, the actor hit out at the "lies and false information" printed by a number of tabloids.

"Pancreatic cancer is an aggressive disease and from the moment I was diagnosed, I knew I was in for the fight of my life," he explained.

"It's a battle, and so far, I've been winning. I'm one of the lucky few that responds well to treatment.

"It's upsetting that the shoddy and reckless reporting from these publications cast a negative shadow on the positive and good fight I'm fighting."

He added: "For me, my family, and those close to me, it amounts to downright emotional cruelty. That makes me angry when hope is so precious."
