Anderton announces retirement

Former England international Darren Anderton has announced he will retire from the game after his club Bournemouth's home game with Chester on Saturday.

The 36-year-old ex-Tottenham stalwart has decided to call it a day despite having a contract at Bournemouth until the end of the season.

"I have enjoyed every minute I have spent at Bournemouth, but before it gets to the stage where I don't enjoy it anymore, I want to call it a day," Anderton told the official Bournemouth website.

"It's been a hard decision to make, but the lads are doing great and they will be absolutely fine. When I first came here, I thought it would be just for a year, so it has been fantastic to play so long.

"I was finding training hard work and rather than just slogging on and not enjoying it, I have decided to make this decision. Saturday will be a sad day for me and I hope I can finish with a win."

Anderton started his career at Portsmouth where he made his debut in 1992. He made the big move to the Premier League two seasons later when he moved to Tottenham, a club where he would end up staying for 14 years and making over 300 appearances.

After leaving Spurs in 2004, Anderton had spells at Birmingham City, Wolves and eventually Bournemouth.

The midfielder won 30 caps for England and was a key member of the team that reached the semi-finals of Euro 96.
