Bosses Urged To Ban Smoking At Work

Employers have been called upon to ban smoking in the workplace to protect the health of their workers.
Unions say that banning smoking at work before the general ban on smoking public places comes in next year would protect the health and even save the lives of some employees.
"For every month that employers wait to introduce a ban, more employees will die or become seriously ill as a result of second-hand smoke," said Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary.
"There is no sensible reason why employers can't be sitting down with staff now to talk about how the ban will happen and how to make every workplace a safer, healthier place to be," he added.
A TUC guide has been published which gives employers tips on how to negotiate with workers to agree on a ban of smoking at work.
With most workplaces already smoke-free, the union says there is little point in waiting for the exact details of the ban to come into force before formulating their own anti-smoking policy.
