UK companies recruited new employees at the fastest rate for two years in July, according to the latest research from the recruitment industry.

From a survey of over 600 recruitment consultancies across the country, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) were able to give the UK jobs market an index rating of 59.1, up from 57 last month (readings above 50 signify expansion).

The number of permanent jobs was also found to be at the highest level of 26 months – making now a good time to be searching for that first job or long-awaited career change.

Salaries are also on the up, according to the survey results, with index readings showing that wages are growing faster now than at any time in the last 12 months.

However, many recruiting departments also complained that despite increasing their recruitment, they were also having to work harder to find quality candidates, with many industries currently suffering a skills shortage.
