'It's not bad that people like June Brown work longer'

Top Tips

It is not a bad thing that people like East Enders ONE WORD actress June Brown are working longer, one charity has said.

According to Help The Aged, while people should not be forced to work into their elderly years those like June who are keen to keep active should not be prevented from doing so.

The 82-year-old actress has just announced that she will appear on the West End - naked - in a forthcoming production of Calendar Girls at the Noel Coward Theatre.

TV fans will know June as the chain-smoking Dot Cotton but in the play she will take on the role of one of the Women's Institute ladies who poses nude in a calendar to raise money for charity.

Other actresses lined-up to take to the stage with June include Jerry Hall, Jill Baker, Anita Dobson, Jill Halfpenny, Sara Crowe and Gemma Atkinson.

An Age Concern and Help the Aged report, released in May, found that one in four over 50s questioned in a recent survey feared that their age will see them forced out of jobs if their employer decides to reduce staff numbers due to the economic downturn.

Furthermore, nearly half were less confident than six months ago that their pension and savings will provide them with a comfortable standard of living in retirement.

A spokesperson for Help the Aged, said: "Many old people want to carry on working.

"The key thing here is choice. We are living longer and we are living healthier. People when they got to 65 were getting very infirm and couldn't work, and the idea was to protect people from being forced to work their entire lives."

He added that people at 65 can be just as physically able and mentally adept as someone ten years younger and therefore if they want to carry on working should be able to do so.

The Office for National Statistics revealed in 2008 that life expectancy in the UK is now 76.9 years for males and 81.3 years for females.

Between 1980 and 1982 COMMA and 2004 and 2006 the life expectancy age in the UK increased by four years for men and 2.8 years for females.

It is estimated that a boy born in the UK in 2006 will have a 91 per cent change of reaching age 65 and a girl a 94 per cent chance.

These statistics may raise the question that as people live longer will they work longer too?
