'Leaving the UK Myleene-style may be key'

Top Tips

Could leaving the UK to find lucrative contracts abroad, as Mylene Klass has just done, be the answer to landing a dream job during the recession?

That may be the question on employees' lips following recent forecasts from the Recruitment Society that it is not likely there will be an upturn in the job market in the near future.

Perhaps with this in mind, Klass has turner her attention to foreign shores and landed a six-figure deal to present the US version of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.

A source close to the star told the Daily Mail: "She has been offered it but because she has got to go away for the whole month she has got to get out of her UK commitments.

"She has been over there having meetings and met all the networks. She most have bowled them over to go in as an unknown and get this job.'

In the UK the job market is looking decidedly downbeat. A survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) recently revealed that the job market will continue to shrink over the next three months.

After surveying more than 500 employers the CIPD found that companies are planning to make further redundancies, with the private sector emerging as more negative than the public sector.

In the private sector, a third of jobs are likely to be capped at the same wage for the next year.

Meanwhile, the Office of National Statistics has revealed that the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count have all increased.

In the first quarter of 2009 the unemployment rate was 7.1 per cent, which was a 0.8 per cent increase on the same period in the previous year.

Steve Huxham, chairman of The Recruitment Society, tried to remain cautious about the job market in the UK.

He said: "I think it's a bit rash to jump to any conclusion about the [job] market."

The expert conceded that the recent unemployment figures were not encouraging but noted that it could have been "much worse than it is".

He concluded: "I don't think you will see any instant upturn.

"The real benchmark is probably going to be the temp or the interim market, because again, if there is a real need for extra headcount quickly, then you are more likely to see that change or pickup."
