School leavers 'need a range of skills', like Zara Phillips

Top Tips

School leavers hoping to get jobs should ensure that they have a skill or a trade to improve their prospects, one expert has said.

According to British Gas, there are a large number of people currently changing their career path because they want to acquire a skill which will make them more employable.

Member of the Royal Family Zara Phillips may be a good role model for students, as she has expanded her earning options by diversifying her career path.

Though her royal position affords her a level of financial stability, the Daily Mail reports that Phillips has used her status to ensure she has a second source of income.

By maximising her profile, Phillips has been able to "cash in" on her name, which in turn has given her the ability to secure big money endorsement contracts.

The horse-loving royal was the face of Land Rover in 2006 and is paid £90,000 a year to be brand ambassador for the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Her spokeswoman told the newspaper: "Zara's very down-to-earth and sees this as a necessary part of her job. It is very, very expensive to compete [in horse racing] at [her] level."

The government is keen for students to acquire skills that will help them find employment and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills recently pledged £26.5 million for the provision of skills and training for young people.

The funding is part of a bigger £4.5 billion package that the government has launched to up-skill adults throughout the UK, in a bid to curb unemployment.

Samina Shad, recruitment and diversity specialist at British Gas, said: "What we are finding is that we are getting a lot of people changing their career path and want to actually have a skill."

The recruitment expert added that officer workers who have been in the same job for 20 years are realising that their career might benefit from acquiring another skill.

Like Phillips, the individuals want to expand their earning options by diversifying into new fields, which will make them more employable.

Gaining an employment-related skill may be more important now than ever. Figures released by the Confederation of British Industry in April this year revealed that the UK recession deepened more than expected in the first three months of 2009.

Ms Shad concluded: "Nowadays, I think it's extremely important, especially for school leavers, [to] think about having a skill and a trade.
