D-Day for Corrie's David
David set to feel the cold hand of the law as Gail celebrates a miserable 50th.
Having firmly secured himself the title of Weatherfield tearaway, it seems David Platt will finally be put away on the day of his long suffering mum's fiftieth birthday.
Platt, played by Jack P Shepherd, has being causing havoc on the street for the past two years, and has been involved with many of the Street's best storylines. Now it looks like the action will follow the teenage terror into a Young Offenders Institution, but the soap's writers have been tight lipped about the fate of young David. Shepherd himself had suggested that Platt could be involved in a gay storyline whilst in prison. Talking to Fern Britton on This Morning he said: "We see him in prison and there are quite a few disturbing scenes in there.
A spokesman for the show was quick to quash these rumours, explaining that Shepherd had been joking, but after such an extraordinary couple of years Corrie fans wouldn't be surprised by anything that happened to David.
For anyone who has forgotten the Corrie storylines, it all started when Richard Hillman, his mum's (Gail's) second husband, turned out to be a psychopath and kidnapped David along with his mum, sister and niece, put them in a car and drove into a canal. The family just escaped, but it soon became clear that some of Hillman's madness had worn off on David. In 2006 he engineered the break-up of Gail and her new boyfriend, started a hate campaign against Charlie Stubbs when he found that that he was sleeping with a girl he liked, was tortured in a bath and finally he found out that Gail had wanted him to be aborted and chose Christmas dinner to tell everyone.
2007 was hardly any smoother for David. First he refused to study for his exams, and burnt the papers as soon as he had completed them, then having got a job at a builder's yard he told his colleagues he was gay, which he isn't, we think, and had to admit to lying and was fired. Things then went from bad to worse soon after when David's niece Bethany swallowed an ecstasy tablet he had hidden in her doll, and had to be rushed to hospital. Gail was furious and threw him out of the house, so David then staged a fake suicide. Not your average year.
Events finally came to a head this year when David pushed Gail down the stairs, in a dramatic episode which dominated TV listings, and he will now join other famous Corrie jailbirds such as Deidre Rashid and Angela Harris, who is still behind bars.
