Summer of sport on TV 2008
Football, tennis, motorsport and the Olympics - it's a veritable sporting feast.
Sports fans across Britain are preparing for one of the most action packed summers in years as major sporting events compete for space in the TV listings.
The action kicks off this Saturday as Switzerland take on Czech Republic in the opening match of Euro 2008. The favourites for the tournament are Germany who qualified with little trouble for the event. Perennial cup disappointments Spain look to have their strongest squad for years with the likes of Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas and Carlos Puyol in the team. In the group stages all eyes will be on the 'group of death' which features the French, Italians and Dutch with Romania the rank outsiders. The failure of any of the home-nations to qualify may dampen interest in the tournament slightly, but at least there will be no penalty heartbreak this year.
Hot on the heels of Wimbledon comes the British Grand Prix. This year's Grand Prix season has already had its fair share of thrills, spills and controversy and Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen look set to be neck and neck by the time this year's race at Silverstone comes around. Last year Raikkonen romped to victory on his way to one of the most competitive title wins in recent years. This year both Renault and BMW will be hoping to compete with McLaren and Ferrari for the British bragging rights.
To top the summer off there is the little matter of the biggest sporting spectacular in the world. No not the annual yard of ale competition in Guernsey, it's the Beijing Olympics of course. The opening ceremony is on August 8th and the festivities will run until August 24th. One of the main attractions of the Games will be Usain Bolt who, as of June 1st, is the world's fastest man after running the 100 metres in 9.72 seconds. One British hopeful is Tom Daley, who will be hoping to become Britain's youngest ever Olympic medallist in the diving at the tender age of 14.
So fasten your seatbelts for a summer of sport or if you like you could always watch that Big Brother show.
