Barcode To Tackle Lost Luggage

Holidaymakers could take advantage of new technology to help track their luggage if it becomes lost at some point during their journey.

With 20,000 bags misplaced at Heathrow airport this week it may be no surprise that lost luggage is one of the main claims for one travel insurer.

American Express says that lost luggage is one of its top three areas it deals with the most and the average claim costs around £580.

As such, the company is launching new technology to help travellers track their missing suitcases.

The system, called iTrak, involves using labels which contain a personal barcode that enables those in possession of the lost luggage to track its owners using the web, text or email.

Joanne Field, Marketing Manager, American Express Travel Insurance: "Losing luggage is more than a nuisance and we are delighted to be able to offer a modern, innovative solution."

American Express is offering one year's free subscription to i-Trak for all its annual travel insurance customers until the end of September 2006.
