Motorists Face £1bn Vandalism Bill

British motorists are likely to suffer vandalism at some point with the total bill for repairs topping £1 billion.

Research by the insurer Direct Line has revealed that six in ten drivers will be the victim of car vandals at some point during their lives.

The average cost of putting the damage right is £267, which either comes out of the owner's pocket or forces them to make a claim on their insurance.

"Direct Line deals with many vandalism claims every year for our customers and it's a growing concern for all car owners," said Emma Holyer, Direct Line's motor spokesperson.

"Many motorists believe this type of crime only happens in inner cities or car parks whereas your car is actually most at risk parked in a quiet dark street away from any street lamps."

The survey also revealed that crime is a major concern for drivers, with 90 per cent saying they were worried about it.
