New Young Driver Policy To Cut Casualties

Young drivers are being offered a new scheme to help reduce accidents and lower the cost of their insurance by changing the way they use Britain's roads.

A new young driver policy could save 18 to 25-year-olds more than £300 off their insurance, according to the provider.

More Than insurance research found almost one million young people have been involved in, or know someone who has been involved in, an accident at night in last three years.

The insurer is launching the DriveTime policy, aimed at cutting casualties in young drivers and changing the way they use Britain's roads.

Advanced in-car technology will be used to monitor when drivers are on the road with drivers paying a reduced standard insurance fee to encourage them to leave their cars at home during the most dangerous hours on the road (between 11pm and 6am).

An additional fee of £25 is applied if a car is driven during these hours.

More Than believes the new scheme could save 18 to 25-year-olds an average of £332 off their insurance – equivalent to national savings of £960 million.

"Young drivers have often found it difficult to get affordable insurance cover as many companies categorise them all as being high risk," said Bryan Turner, head of DriveTime at More Than.

"We recognised that not all young drivers are the same and wanted to come up with a way to reward safer young motorists with cheaper premiums."
