No Stigma Buying Second-Hand Goods

British consumers are taking advantage of the savings to be made buying quality second-hand goods, according to new research.

It seems Britons have the bargain-hunting bug as one in every seven objects in an average UK home is second-hand, according to a new survey.

More than 9.5 million homeowners regularly rummage through goods at car boot sales and charity shops looking for a bargain, reveals home insurer esure.com.

Some 740,000 admit to trying rubbish tips or skips for a thrifty item and others turn to the internet for a bargain - with online auction site eBay proving particularly popular with shoppers.

A third of homeowners think there is no point paying full price for new books, DVDs, CDs or games when they can pick up quality used ones at a fraction of the cost.

Gone are the days of feeling shame in buying used goods as only 14 per cent of people would be 'very embarrassed' or seven per cent 'slightly embarrassed' to admit to a friend they hand bought something second hand.

Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at esure.com, said: "The rise in popularity of eBay and hobbies such as 'car booting' has led to a phenomenal transformation in what we buy for our homes and lengthened life spans of everyday objects as they are frequently passed from one owner to the next.

"The majority of home contents insurance policies offer 'new for old' replacement cover, so when working out the value of your contents the key is to calculate the replacement value of items and forget about what was initially paid for them - if anything at all."
