Older Travellers Opt For Gap Year

Gap years are proving popular with both young and old as 89 per cent of people planning to take some time out are over the age of 30, according to a new survey.

Nearly 90 per cent of people planning to take a gap year in the UK are over the age of 30, according to research.

It seems taking a year out is not just for graduates wanting to take a break before working life but many adults are considering the option as well, a survey by American Express travel insurance revealed.

Figures show sales of extended travel polices, used by those planning to venture abroad for more than a few weeks, have increased 155 per cent over the last five years.

Over half of gap years taken in the UK are by over 25's and almost 40 per cent are taken by travellers over the age of 55 – but whatever the age insurance it vital, according to the insurer.

"Whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance," said Joanne Field from American Express Travel Insurance.

"Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans."

Top destinations for adventurers are the USA, New Zealand, South America, Australia, Europe, India, Africa, Canada, France and Italy.
