Poor Uni Students Living With Parents
Over a fifth of young people hoping to start university this year will live with their parents while they study because of financial worries, according to new research.
A poll by Lloyds TSB student banking revealed 35 per cent of young people would find it too expensive to go to university if they could not stay at home while they studied and two fifths said that they could leave home but it would mean taking on additional debt.
Marcus Banks from Lloyds TSB student banking said: "With student debts escalating, living at home could seem like an easy way to save money. But for many, going to university isn't just about getting a degree – it's also about learning to live an independent life."
For 42 per cent of young people they admit that the choice of abode is down to 'an easy life' rather than money worries.
Family therapist Phillip Hodson said: "The psychological consequences of staying at home may be severe. Stay-at-home youngsters tend to remain adolescent with damaged powers of personal decision-making."
