Rise Of Card-Not-Present Fraud

Consumers may be more comfortable with shopping online but the latest figures show a rise in card-not-present fraud costing millions of pounds every year.

The biggest type of credit and debit card crime committed in the UK is card-not-present fraud costing some £183.2 million last year.

Figures from anti-fraud body CIFAS reveal that there is an incidence of card fraud every nine seconds and £1.2 million is lost to card fraudsters every day.

With more than half of all UK adults purchasing at least one item online, according to UK payment association Apacs, one of the biggest worries for consumers is card-not-present crime – fraud committed on telephone, on the internet or by mail order.

"Card-not-present fraud has increased because we are shopping more online, we find it more convenient, we find it easier, but the fraudsters have moved naturally with us," said Simon Bennett from Apacs.

"Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, covers the use of credit cards online. However it is up to those companies whether or not they accept joint responsibility for any failed purchases.

"The best advice is to keep your computer up to date with the most up to date security measures and just generally be aware of the different types of dangers that exist out there," Mr Bennett added.
