Savings Swapped For Holidays

Savers, especially the over 50s, are dipping into their accounts to pay for holidays and weekend breaks, according to new figures.

More than a quarter of Brits raided their savings to fund a summer break in the last few months, according to new research.

Figures from Birmingham Midshires revealed that the over 50s were the worst for swapping their savings for spending as the age group was six times more likely to dip into their accounts than the under 30s.

Savers aged over 50 years took out £657 from their savings compared with £92 used by the under 30s.

The main reason for the over 50s raiding their savings accounts was for holiday and weekend breaks, closely followed by unexpected utility and household bills (for 22 per cent).

"People are clearly making the effort to save; the hard part however is leaving the funds in savings and not spending them," commented Jason Robinson from Birmingham Midshires.

"This comes from planning and commitment and we always encourage savers to try and be realistic in what they put away."
