Shop Around For New Mobile Phone
Consumers are being warned to take extra care when picking out a new mobile phone deal because a change of mind is much harder to cope with when a contract has been signed.
Buyers should take their time to pick the right mobile phone, contract and network provider because once they sign a deal it is legally binding, warns a consumer advice service.
Shoppers are often confused by too many choices – such as different handsets, types of contracts or call and text packages - and rush into decisions that they later regret, according to Consumer Direct which received 26,000 complaints about telecommunications last year.
"You can't opt out of a contract if you simply change your mind, so make sure you know and understand what you're getting yourself into," said Carol Brady from Consumer Direct.
"Things to look out for include how long you're under contract for, hidden call costs and the areas of coverage your service provider has."
But it is not all bad news and if there is a problem with the new phone, consumers may still be entitled to a refund, replacement or repair.
"Don't forget that once you've chosen your deal and signed up to a contract, you still have consumer rights," Ms Brady said.
