Small Premium to Cover DIY Disasters

Homeowners are advised to check their home insurance contents and to consider adding a low premium to cover the potentially high costs of accidental damage.

Adding a low cost accidental damage premium to home insurance could help homeowners avoid the high cost of DIY disasters, according to new research.

Price comparison website insuresupermarket.com warns property owners to check their home insurance policy contents before embarking on any DIY projects.

Richard Mason, insuresupermarket.com spokesman, said: "Whilst most DIY jobs are relatively simple, when people attempt more complicated jobs, accidents can occur.

"Consider the implications of a botched DIY job, for example, if you install a new bathroom which leaks through into your neighbour's flat below, you will be liable and have a much more costly problem."

Research shows accidental damage cover can be added to home insurance for as little as £22 but insuresupermarket.com advisers people to shop around as some insurers charge up to three times more on cover than others.

Householders can reduce their premiums and the chance of accidents by doing small things such as fitting a smoke alarm, securing fittings and checking locks, according to the research.

"Improvements such as adding an alarm or British Standard approved window locks could reduce your insurance premiums by as much as ten per cent," he added.

It also advises people to revise their policy after any big DIY improvements as a new kitchen or bathroom could change the amount of the home insurance.
