Storm Damage On Home Policy?

Consumers are advised to check their home insurance policy for storm damage cover, as August is a prime month for thunder and lightning.

Homeowners are being urged to check whether storm damage is covered by their insurance policy to help deal with seasonal lightning storms.

August is the worst month of the year for lightning damage with up to five times more claims being made in that month than any other, according to Halifax.

Lightning can cause a huge amount of damage to property with the average claim for storm damage now costing over £600, an increase of 20 per cent from last year.

Consumers should make sure they have adequate cover and that storm damage is specified in the policy.

"It's very important to make sure that you have the correct sum insured to cover the maximum possible loss or damage or your payout following any claim will be reduced," said Vicky Emmott from Halifax.

Met Office tips for coping with a storm include unplugging non-essential appliances before a thunderstorm hits, seek shelter if out and about, avoid using the phone and avoid water.
