Surge In Spending At Auction Sites

More consumers are choosing to shop online and auction sites are proving particularly popular, according to new figures.

New figures reveal a growth in online spending at auction sites, according to research by the UK payment association.

The Association for Payment Clearing Services (Apacs) found that for the first time more than half of all adults, some 25 million consumers, made an online purchase during 2005.

Some 4.9 million adults made their most recent internet purchase from an auction site and a massive 79 million transactions created a combined £2.8 billion spent on auction sites in 2005.

"The internet is now very much part of mainstream culture in the UK, and for many people it is the first port of call when looking for certain items to buy," explained Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs.

"However consumers must be alert to the threats posed by internet criminals, and take steps to protect themselves when shopping online.

"Consumers should only ever buy online from a computer with up-to-date virus protection, and only shop at secure websites. We all need to be vigilant and be careful with our cards and personal details."
