Unoccupied Homes Deem Insurance Void

Over half a million homes in Britain are left unattended for more than 30 days a year deeming their insurance policies void, a new study claims.

Research from Halifax Home Insurance states that over 250,000 Britons are unaware that if they are away from their homes for more than 30 days per annum they are uninsured against thefts or damages.

The research comes as Halifax has brought in a 60-day unoccupancy limit, double that of the standard insurer, which is deemed to be a more realistic length.

Vicky Emmot, Halifax Home Insurance spokesperson, said: "A substantial number of households leave their property unoccupied for long periods of time. But few realise that just a four week holiday could invalidate the policy. Halifax has taken this into account"

Despite burglary being down two per cent in the latest crime figures released by the government, homeowners are being advised to take extra precautions when leaving their property unoccupied.

Extra vigilance is needed and insurers recommend timing light switches, stopping papers and milk and leaving any valuables with a bank or a friend with their own secure insurance policy.
