UK Utility Regulators

The UK utility market is now de-regulated and open for competition by private companies offering cheaper bills. The following sites are the Government's utility regulators who ensure the public receive a quality utility service and fair competition between gas, electricity, telecommunication and water suppliers.

Office for the Regulation of Electricity & Gas (OFREG)

Comment: The Office for the Regulation of Electricity & Gas, OFREG, is an independent public body set up to monitor the electricity and natural gas industries in Northern Ireland. It's duties include promoting competition in the electricity industry, protecting electricity and gas consumers, and arbitrating in disputes between consumer and supplier.

Office of Communications (Ofcom)

Comment: Ofcom is the regulator for the UK communications industries, with responsibilities across television, radio, telecommunications and wireless communications services. Ofcom exists to further the interests of citizen-consumers as the communications industries enter the digital age. The site has information on how to make a complaint, submit a query, and contact details for their offices.

International Water Association (IWA)

Comment: IWA is a leading international membership association for the improvement of urban water management worldwide in an environmentally sustainable way. IWA's coverage includes all aspects of water supply and treatment, wastewater collection, treatment and disposal and overall management of water quality and quantity, including environmental and public health issues.

Office of Gas & Electricity Markets (OFGEM)

Comment: Ofgem is the Office of the Gas and Electricity Markets, regulating the gas and electricity industries in Great Britain. Ofgem's aim is to bring choice and value to all gas and electricity customers by promoting competition and regulating monopolies. Ofgem licences and monitors the gas and electricity companies, taking action where necessary to ensure compliance.

Office of Water Services (OFWAT)

Comment: Ofwat is responsible for making sure that the water and sewerage companies in England and Wales give you a good-quality, efficient service at a fair price. Ofwat's roles including limiting the amount companies can charge customers and making sure that companies can carry out their responsibilities under the Water Industry Act 1991.

Water UK

Comment: Represents all UK water suppliers and waste water operators at a national and European level, providing a positive framework for the water industry to engage with government, regulators, stakeholder organisations and the public. They seek to develop policy and improve understanding in areas that involve the industry, its customers and stakeholders.

Digital Television (Dti)

Comment: This site is designed to help you to find out about the Government's policies for digital television and provides answers to consumers' frequently asked questions. Government is working to help ensure the success of digital television whether through an aerial or via cable or satellite in order to increase the number and variety of services available to consumers.

Water Industry Commissioner for Scotland

Comment: This is the economic and customer service regulator of the three Scottish water authorities: East of Scotland Water Authority, West of Scotland Water Authority and North of Scotland Water Authority. The primary role of the Commissioner is to promote the interests of customers of the three Scottish water authorities.
