Holiday Guides for Africa - South Africa

Durban holiday

You've heard of Cape Town and Johannesburg, but Durban is another vibrant South African city that is a perfect holiday destination for the cultural traveller.

Durban is the third most populous city in South Africa, the largest in the KwaZulu-Natal region and well known as being the busiest port in Africa.

Located on the east coast of South Africa on the shores of the Indian Ocean, Durban is the homeland of the powerful Zulu nation, one of Africa's most well-known pre-colonisation nations.

The city's warm climate, multitude of beaches and energetic pace has also made it a major centre for tourism in recent years.

As summer is now in full swing, flight offers abound, so tourists should find flights online and book a last minute holiday before they are all snapped up.

Traditions and culture in Durban

Durban is an eclectic mix of African, Asian and European influences, which lends the city a uniquely cosmopolitan vibe and character.

The area that corresponds with present-day Durban was initially colonised by Dutch settlers and later by the English. Large groups of Indian indentured labourers were then brought in to work in the emerging sugar industry.

The cultural traditions of the native African population along with that of the various other arrivals have informed Durban's cultural landscape up until now.

Traditional Zulu culture is as much a way of life as it is a tourist attraction. The Zulu people treasure their heritage and are always friendly and hospitable.

Dancing and singing remain very much part of the lifestyle of the Zulu people - each dance formation and movement symbolises an event or occurrence within the clan.
