Holiday Guides for Caribbean - Grenada

Grenada

Take an excursion to this lesser-known Caribbean isle and enjoy the wealth of natural beauty and enjoyment it offers

Ask anyone to name a popular Caribbean holiday destination and the likelihood is that they will mention Jamaica or perhaps even Barbados. Many people are at a loss when it comes to thinking of Caribbean destinations to visit, but this string of islands has so much more to offer.

Grenada is known affectionately as the Spice Island, famed for the preponderance of diverse and exotic spices and herbs available throughout its many markets.

Not only is Grenada known for its prolific production of mace, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger, but this tropical island getaway is adored for its strikingly rugged mountainous landscapes, cascading waterfalls, majestic rainforests and secluded beaches.

Grenada Traditions and culture

The influence of the French from the colonial area is evident in the cultural life of Grenada, although to a lesser extent than other Caribbean islands. Having said that, family and place names in French can be readily observed throughout the island, as can Gallic influences in the local dialect Patois, which is laced with numerous French loanwords.

There are stronger French influences to be found in the local cuisine, which contains well seasoned spicy food and styles of cooking that are highly reminiscent of those found in the French Quarter of New Orleans.

The national dish of Grenada is the so-called "oildown", a term that refers to a dish cooked in coconut milk until all the milk is absorbed, leaving a bit of coconut oil at the bottom of the cooking pot.

Traditional oildown recipes include potent mixtures of salted pigtails, pigs' feet (trotters), salt beef, chicken, dumplings made from flower, breadfruit, green banana, yams and potatoes. Callaloo leaves are at times used to retain steam and to add extra flavour.

Grenada Recommended

Visitors should always visit the capital St George's, which is located on Grenada Island and has one of the prettiest harbour settings throughout the Caribbean.

Carriacou is dotted with traditional East Caribbean towns and friendly locals, while Petit Martinique offers the opportunity to relax and unwind and let life's troubles pass you by.

As far as areas of outstanding natural beauty go, they don't come more stunning than Grand Etang National Park, which stands on the Grand Etand Lake in Grenada's central highlands.

There are various walking trails that tourists can indulge in, from 30-minute ambles to full on day-long hikes. The visitor centre by the lake can arrange guides for longer hikes.

The second weekend in August is Carnival, the island's biggest and busiest event, so ensure that you carry out a hotel search before you leave, as this is a very popular time.

Grenada Weather

Like all of the Caribbean, with its gentle tropical climate, there isn't really a bad time to visit Grenada. Temperatures average around 29 degrees C (84 degrees Fahrenheit).

It does however, rain between June and November, as that is the rainy season. Even during the dry months, it is not unknown to rain a fair bit, although not massively.

The hurricane season runs from June to November so during this period, ensure that you keep an eye out for any weather warnings.

Grenada Destination checklist

Grenada uses the East Caribbean dollar. For an idea of typical prices, a litre of bottled water or Carib beer will set you back four dollars. A typical street snack such as chicken roti costs eight dollars, while a souvenir t-shirt will cost about 40 dollars.
