Krakow holiday

Once a biword for communism and political plight, eastern Europe is fast becoming a popular weekend break destination.

Once a byword for communism and political plight, eastern Europe is fast becoming a popular weekend break destination for holidaying Brits looking for cheap beer which is not too far from home.

Served by most of the major low-cost airlines, Krakow has emerged as a leader in this market.

Maybe that is because the historic Polish captial has more to offer visitors than good nightlife and cheap alcohol. The city was one of the few urban areas to emerge from World War II unharmed, meaning that its historic architecture is wonderfully intact.

Furthermore, the city is big enough to keep visitors occupied and yet not so large that they get swamped - quite a feat considering this city is Poland's third largest and has a population of 1.4 milion, including the surrounding provinces.

Visitors who find their way to Main Marlet Square can enjoy being surrounded by historic monuments and museums, while the Old Town still affords an air of authenticity.

Traditions and culture in Krakow

Krakow is becoming increasingly modern, since its accession to the EU imparticular. A large number of Poles have friends or relatives living in the UK and therefore have a relatively decent understand of English and the culture in the UK.

Culture differences that holidaymakers should be aware of include tipping. This practice is not as commonplace as in the UK, and is restricted to prestigious hotels and top establishments. Similarly, it is not the custom to tip taxi drivers, though they are unlikely to complain should a traveller wish to do so.

Holidaymakers looking for a bargain should also steer clear of trying to drive market traders and independent shop holders down on their prices. The chances are they are already offering a very competitive price and will not take kindly to tourists attempts to make their profit margins even lower.
