Avignon holiday

Surrounded by some of France's most stunning natural scenery, Avignon is a graceful city that is still the jewel in Provence's crown, and the perfect holiday retreat.

Located on the banks of the Rhone, Avignon is one of the major cities in southern France and is the main city of the departement of Vaucluse.

This vibrant, culturally-savvy metroplis is positively brimming with cultural pursuits and continues to bear the sought-after title of France's traditional patron of the arts. In fact, Avignon was one of the European Cities of Culture in 2000.

The city's historic centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site. A bustling walled city, it boasts numerous museums, a fabled bridge, Pont St Beneze, a massive medieval fortress and a papal palace, Palais des Papes. With so much to see and do, tourists should book flights online and enjoy a relaxing holiday at this inviting destination.

Avignon is alive with culture - everywhere you look, you are sure to find a museum, opera house or some sort of artistic outlet. Most notable is the Notre Dame des Doms, a cathedral built in a Romanesque style, which features many beautiful works of art.

The mausoleum of Pope John XXII is perhaps one of the most beautiful works within the cathederal. A true masterpiece, it is a prime example of 14th century Gothic carving.

Built mostly in the 12th century, the cathedral's most prominent feature is the gilded statue of the Virgin which surmounts the western tower.

The Notre Dame des Doms also alludes to the religious culture of Avignon, which is predominantly Catholic.

In 2002, as part of the reshuffling of the ecclesiastic provinces of France, the Archdiocese of Avignon ceased to be a metropolitan and became a "suffragan diocese" of the new province of Marseilles.

Cuisine in the southern region of France is rich in quality citrus fruits, vegetables and herbs. Seafood is very popular around this locale, due to its proximity to the coast. Other popular dishes include air-dried sausages, goat cheeses, beef and lamb.
