Traditions & Culture in Nice

There is something to offer nearly everyone in Nice, whether young or old. Far and away one of the city's prevalent characteristics is its food, which serves as a central focus to both residents and tourists alike and is epitomised in the street markets that offer enough French and Mediterranean food stuffs to satiate even the most hard to please palette.

Nice remains a very walkable city, characterised by a multitude of side streets and pedestrian town squares. That said, finding cheap car hire is advisable in order to take advantage of the further reaching attractions in one's holiday guide.

Nice's long association with the arts has also endowed it with an appealing relaxed and reflective ambience, while still maintaining much of the cultural charms common to the rest of France.

With cheap and value hotels easy to find, lavishing some of your extra cash on the service of waiters with a tip is one very French characteristic that should be adhered to.

Recommended in Nice

The Colline du Chateau ruins provide both an excellent vantage point to view the city, as well as allowing visitors to see some historic Greek architecture, evident in the still remaining castle walls. Although it is useful to heed the warnings of holiday guides, for the 90 meter trek is not for the faint hearted.

Traditional Nice cuisine such as the famous Salad Nicoise must be sampled, with this dish in particular served in the truly original style of fresh tuna steak broken liberally among the salad leaves and oozing egg yokes. Nice also has a wide selection of oddly flavoured ice creams, such as Basil & Tomato and Black Olive flavour that are in fact surprisingly delicious.

The beach is another obvious highlight, blending free-to-use beaches and sectioned off private areas of coast that allow daily access for a menial fee.

Old town - a confusing maze of higgledy-piggledy houses, shops and quaint alleyways - is also a must-see.

Cultural offerings include the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Mamac) and the Musee des Beaux-Arts.

Weather in Nice

Long warm summers and amiably mild winters betray nothing but the city's Mediterranean ties once again. Expect averages of 25 degrees C in the foremost summer months of July and August, although summer remains through the duration of May to September. Winter rarely drops below 5 degrees C.

Destination Check List for Nice

Nice is very much a tourist town so is safe by bus, on foot or by cheap hire car. Accommodation ranges from value hotel resorts to more upmarket establishments, although it is worth booking in advance or at least getting some holiday information on potential "sleeperies" before arrival. The airport is located within easy reach of the city centre and it is possible to find flights online from most major cities in Europe.
