Aalborg Holiday

Denmark's fourth-largest city wants to find itself, and is quickly becoming a popular holiday destination

Traditions and culture in Aalborg

Aalborg's roots can be traced back well over 1,000 years, when it was a popular trading post due to its location on the Limfjord - the body of water which separates the two parts of Jutland.

Remnants of two ancient settlements and a large burial ground can still be seen today on Lindholm Hoje, a hill which offers views over city, thus highlighting the importance it once held.

In the 16th century it was granted a monopoly in salt herring, which meant that it was capable of rivalling the east coast of England in terms of trade competition and cultural development.

The city's aerodrome was seized by the Germans during their invasion of Denmark during 1940, proving to be a useful launch pad for its aircraft to be able to fly to Norway.

Indeed, it is believed that Aalborg was the first-ever city to be captured by paratroopers.

Things to do in Aalborg

People taking a holiday to Aalborg have often noted that it lacks a certain soul you would expect with a major city, perhaps because it is still attempting to place itself in the modern climate.

Furthermore, it has lost a lot of its historical charm to industrial and commercial developments, which also serve to make it more impersonal and feel bigger than it actually is.

However, the city centre contains plenty of ancient timber buildings - similar to the panelled room on display at the National Museum in Copenhagen - which offer an insight into the life of Renaissance Aalborg residents.

The tourism industry is growing gradually and generally centres around the impressive diversity of shops and eateries, which underline its attraction as a holiday destination.

Unfortunately, finding a decent value hotel is not straightforward, with accommodation another area in which the city is crying out for development in order to fulfil its undoubted potential.

Weather in Aalborg

Anyone looking to book flights to Aalborg should not be put off by old stories about the Danish climate, as it is similar to those of many other north European countries.

June, July and August are particularly pleasant, bringing average temperatures of around 22C, while there are regularly beautiful, sunny days in the autumn.

However, the mercury begins to slide south in October and January is particularly chilly, with an average temperature of 0C.
