Panama Holiday

This central American destination has far more to offer than just the Panama Canal

Mention the name Panama and immediately you are likely to think about the world famous major canal that traverses the Isthmus of Panama, connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean.

Make no mistake about it, the Panama Canal is a monumental achievement in man-made engineering - an estimated total of 27,500 workers died by the time it was completed in the early 1900s.

But this destination has been known as "the country with that canal" for far too long and it is about time that it emerges from that shadow and shows the world that it has plenty more to offer.

Panama has amazing natural attractions which offer a strong pull to far-sighted travellers bound by wanderlust to explore the furthest reaches of the world's far-flung destinations.

Granted, Panama is not the first destination that springs to mind when tourists are carrying out a holiday search, perusing the pages of glossy travel brochures. But this often-overlooked location has some of the world's best opportunities for bird watching, snorkelling in warm Caribbean waters and hiking the mountain ranges of the Americas.

Panama Traditions and culture

The culture of Panama is derived mostly from European music, art and traditions which, like in the case of most south and central American countries, was introduced by Spanish colonisation.

There has also been a unique blending of African and Native American cultural elements with European culture to produce a truly special cultural entity in its own right. For example, the tamborito is a Spanish dance that was blended with Native American rhythms, themes and dance moves to produce a unique musical form.

Another example of the syncretism of Panama's culture can be found in its traditional products such as woodcarvings, ceremonial masks and pottery, as well as in the county's architecture, festivals and national cuisine.

However, a good example of Panama's original culture prior to the arrival of Spanish conquistadors is that of the 'Kuna Indians' who are known locally as molas.

Mola is the Kuna Indian word for blouse, but the term mola has come to define the intricate embroidered panels that make up the front and back of a Kuna woman's top.

Panama Recommended

To experience these unique cultural manifestations, tourists are recommended to visit the Museum of the Panamanian in Panama City.

These artistic works are also finely showcased at the Museum of Panamain History, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum of Religious Colonial Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of the Interoeanic Canal.

Many of Panama's colourful and vibrant festivals are big crowd-pullers. Party-goers are urged to to visit Panama City or Las Tablas for Carnival, which is held each year on the weekend before Ash Wednesday.

If you are visiting at this time, be sure to do an extensive hotel search before you fly out, because hotel rooms are likely to fill up very quickly.

Panama Weather

If you intend to spend most of your time on the Pacific side during your stay, you should visit in December of January as during this time there is generally little rain and the weather is pleasant.

Panama's mountainous regions can get very cold at night, so ensure that you bring suitable clothing to wrap up warm.
