Camping And Caravanning Holiday In Edinburgh

As well as being the capital city, Edinburgh is also one of Scotland's most architecturally and culturally refined cities, boasting a clean and well-maintained infrastructure that is the envy of many larger British cities.

As a result, when it was suggested to me by a friend that we go camping in Edinburgh I was not filled with the sense of foreboding I otherwise might have had had we been going to most other cities in the UK.

Indeed, Edinburgh features some of the finest and best-groomed camp and caravan sites in Scotland, with its picture-perfect location on the Firth of Forth creating a sublime backdrop for what can be a cheap yet romantic holiday get-away.

From Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyrood, one of the city's many ghost tours to the Edinburgh dungeon, the city has a host of attractions to keep visitors entertained, in addition to one of the most vibrant club scenes in the UK.

During our jaunt around Edinburgh the first site we stayed at was Hoddom Castle Caravan Park, located near Lockerbie.

Situated amidst some of the most spectacular countryside in the lowlands, the site is also well equipped. It features on-site fishing on its own water, filled with sea trout, salmon, pike and coarse fishing. The site also hosts its own nine hole golf course with three 20 hole courses within 20 minutes drive.

It also has 150 pitches, with facilities for laundry, chemical disposal, restaurant, power points, a TV lounge and a games room. Prices range from £5 to £11 based on two people sharing a tent or caravan.

However, while most camp and caravan sites in Edinburgh are maintained to a high standard and reliable bus services mean the entire city is within easy reach, it is nevertheless preferable to move between camp sites in order to explore the city to its fullest.

As a result, on the second night we found ourselves moving across the city to Drummohr Caravan Park, located right on the Forth of Firth in Levenhall, Musselburgh.

It features 120 pitches located a spacious distance apart, within easy reach of facilities for drinking water and waste disposal.

There are also two well-maintained toilet blocks, a disabled toilet, shower facilities and electric hook up points, with prices starting at £9 to £11 based on two people sharing a tent or caravan.

From there we decided to head west towards Falkirk to find another camp site. The Beecraigs Caravan & Camping Site, set amidst the Bathgate Hills, offers a high standard of facilities within Beecraigs Country Park.

Offering lunch and dinner at the Beecraigs restaurant, there are also convenient electricity and water hook-up points at this campsite that is ideally located for exploring Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and the Trussochs. Prices range from £9.10 to £13.40.

So for the perfect mix of outdoor adventure with the thrills of one of the UK's most scenic and vibrant cities, visitors should seriously consider camping and caravanning around Edinburgh.
