London and Yorkshire are Burglary Hotspots
What You Need to Know
- London and West Yorkshire see the highest number of burglaries reported anywhere in the UK.
- Stoke Newington and Apperley are particular hotspots for their particular regions.
- Experts expect that victims often do not claim on their insurance to avoid premium hikes.
- Using safes or key cabinets can reduce the risk posed to you.
- Given their relatively low cost, investing in such products could be a wise move.
Londoners and people in West Yorkshire are more likely to make burglary insurance claims than anywhere else in the country, according to recent analysis.
Households in London's Stoke Newington and those in Apperley Bridge in Bradford topped a list of burglary hotspots.
More than three million quotes made last year were analysed to see where applicants declared a previous claim for burglary or theft from their home or garden.
Residents in the N16 and BD10 postcodes declared 33.6 and 33.1 insurance claims per 1,000 claims respectively, according to analysis by MoneySupermarket.com.
London and Leeds postcodes appeared most often in the claim chart.
Surprisingly, there were 17 areas of the UK where no previous burglaries were declared at all.
These included Eastbourne in East Sussex, Peterlee in County Durham, and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Experts say that it is often the case that people do not make claims for small losses as they increase future premiums.
Government crime statistics for the 12 months to September 2011 mirror the data.
Areas with the highest rates of burglary are West Yorkshire, which includes Leeds and Bradford, and the capital.
Many businesses and homeowners are now taking proactive steps to protect their belongings, using secure safes and key cabinets to store their valuable goods and keys.
Retailers including esafes stock a wide variety of safes and key cabinets to cater for domestic and business use. For a full selection visit www.esafes.co.uk
