International Powered Access Federation

Comment: Formed in 1983 to represent the whole of the industry, from manufacturing, distribution and rental trades to associate businesses and users of all forms of powered access equipment. They are the most influential body of their kind, and have members from over 20 countries worldwide.

Sleep Council, The

Comment: Promotes the benefits to health and wellbeing of a good night's sleep and the importance of buying a good bed. They provide independent information and advice to help you choose the right sleep system - from mattress size to spring type. The site also features a clubber's guide to catching up on those zzzs.

Federation of Master Builders (FMB)

Comment: The leading employers' trade association in the UK building industry. Membership requires a builder to prove they offer suitably high standards of working practice and business methods and is thus widely accepted as a hallmark of quality. Site features include factsheets, news and events pages.

Institute of Plumbing

Comment: Founded in 1906, this is the UK's professional body for plumbers and others in the plumbing industry. It has a large membership, some of whom are listed in the member directory where a local registered plumber can be found by simply entering a postcode.

Copper Development Association

Comment: Provides technical advice and information to promote the correct and efficient use of copper and copper alloys in all applications. They have a free helpline offering technical advice and details of UK suppliers to all users and potential users of copper and copper alloys.

Institute of Electrical Engineers

Comment: Founded in 1871, this is the largest professional engineering society in Europe and has a worldwide membership. It represents the profession of electrical, electronic, manufacturing and systems engineering and related sciences. Check out the site for details of events, lectures and publications.

British Standards Institute

Comment: A world leader in standards and quality management services. Owns the most famous of all product quality marks - the Kitemark. They also provide expertise in product testing, CE marking, global trade inspection, environmental management, information security, and technical advice to exporters.

British Wood-Preserving and Damp-Proofing Association

Comment: This trade association places great emphasis on standards of workmanship and ethics. They publish codes of practice, guidance on training and legal aspects of trading in the industry and standard specifications, as well as informative leaflets on all aspects of wood treatment and damp control.

Institute of Domestic Heating & Environmental Engineers

Comment: An independent non-profit making professional body, founded in 1964. They are the only professional body for solely the domestic heating industry. The Institute aims to promote energy efficient domestic central heating components and the installation of safe and efficient systems.

Builders Merchant Federation

Comment: Provides builders merchants with the support and advice needed to run their businesses in a competitive environment.
