Numbers of student car insurance companies are on the up. The majority of these companies negotiate with the UK’s leading car insurers in order to secure low insurance premiums for students. They are aware that there is a demand from students for the most affordable policies possible, especially at a time when saving money is essential. This is even truer of recent, given the increased cost of tuition fees, meaning that students are finding it even harder to afford car insurance.
Unfortunately, statistics show that under 25s are most likely to make a claim on their car insurance, meaning that the premiums are highest for this age group. The majority of students fall into this age group, thus are susceptible to high car insurance costs which cannot be avoided.
However, there are ways of reducing your student car insurance premium. Although providing a lower level of cover, third party cover will be a cheaper option than purchasing fully comprehensive cover. Also, as with all young drivers, the majority of car insurance providers will also offer discounts to students who have further driving qualifications such as Pass Plus. The type of car you own will also have implications on the cost of the premiums. A car with a lower engine will cost less to insure.
Other ways of keeping your car insurance premiums to a minimum include having a good alarm system fitted, and parking the car in a garage or private driveway. It is worth noting however, that if you move from a rural area to a city university, your premium will increase due to the higher crime rate in urban areas.
The cost of your insurance policy is determined by the risk at which the provider considers you and your car. All of the aforementioned techniques will reduce the level of risk with which you are regarded, thus reduce the cost of your car insurance.
Be sure to compare quotes to several different insurance providers in order to find an affordable yet comprehensive student car insurance policy.
