If you are a UK student studying abroad, or a foreign student studying in the UK, purchasing student health insurance would be a very wise move. Many universities offer health insurance plans, but the coverage tends to be limited, and require that you receive medical assistance at the campus’ health facilities only.
Naturally, the most comprehensive cover will provide the best care should you fall ill or sustain an injury. Students abroad should be insured by a medical insurance policy. They should be covered for both inpatient and outpatient treatment, medical prescriptions, GP treatment and serious illnesses, bad health or hospital stays. You should also be insured for the cost of returning home if you become seriously ill or disabled, as well as for the cost of returning your remains home should you die abroad. Most student health insurance policies cover these.
Most student healthcare policies will offer routine medical coverage, so when looking for a policy suitable for you, have a look around at all of the different benefits and extras on offer. Be sure to check the fine print of the policies you look at, to check there are no hidden fees or costs. Some policies require that you pay additional fees if you have to receive medical attention form a healthcare specialist such as a cardiologist.
Many student health insurance providers will require you to have a medical before insuring you to check that you have no pre-existing conditions which will end up costing them a large amount of money. If this is a problem for you, have a look around for a company that boasts a no medical policy.
When pricing your premiums, insurers do take into account that students are on a budget, therefore aim to come up with the lowest premiums possible.
