It seems that whatever the reason for your journey, there’s a specialised insurance policy to cover your trip. Business trips are no exception! Just because you are going abroad for business purposes does not mean that you are any less likely to have an accident or be the victim of theft than a holiday-maker, so insurance is always advisable.
As to whether your employer provides cover for your trip or not depends entirely on the company for which you work. As a general rule of thumb, larger companies are more likely to provide their own insurance, although this is not always the case, with many larger companies not offering cover. Be sure to check this out as generally, most insurers exclude business travel from their policies.
For self-employed people, remember that you are solely responsible for whatever position you find yourself in. If you do fall victim to theft or sustain an injury without having purchased insurance, you are going to be the one who will have to deal with any financial losses incurred. You would be very well advised to get adequate business travel insurance before you travel, as this will save you a great deal of money should the unexpected happen, and you do need to make a claim.
In terms of the policy itself, business travel insurance will usually cover cancellation, business equipment (such as laptops) and sports equipment (including golf clubs!) Naturally, if you are unfortunate enough to be taken ill whilst away on business, your medical costs will be covered. Business travel insurance policies also cover all of the usual eventualities such as theft.
If you have to travel abroad frequently on business, annual business travel insurance is available, and is likely to work out cheaper than buying individual policies for every single trip you make.
