Regular travel insurance policies do not tend include cover for winter sports such as skiing, as they are far more likely to end in an accident, and consequently, an insurance claim. It is a hazardous sport after all! Given that this is the case, skiing insurance is a must if you’re hitting the slopes on your holiday.
Not only do skiing insurance policies cover the usual eventualities, such as injury, illness, theft delays and cancellation, but they also offer cover for all of your skiing equipment. So, what should your policy ideally include? Off piste skiing should be included as part of the standard policy, as should cover for piste closure, avalanches and ski hire. Also as standard, rescue and repatriation should be covered, as well as personal liability and legal fees. You may also want to check that your policy also provides mountain rescue cover.
If you travel abroad to ski regularly (two or more times a year), it may be worth looking into purchasing annual holiday cover which includes skiing insurance. Otherwise, specific single trip skiing insurance is an ideal way (and possibly the cheapest) of getting a suitable level of cover. Either way, have a shop around to see what type of cover works best for you, and is at an affordable price.
It is also worth noting that many skiing insurance providers cover you automatically for most other winter sports such as snowboarding and bobsleighing. More dangerous winter sports, however, such as ski jumping, are usually excluded. Also, the cost for covering children under 18 is usually discounted to around half of the original rate. Large groups of people who are also going skiing together may also be able to obtain a discount if they book their insurance together with the same insurance provider.
