As a courier business owner, you have the responsibility to protect your vans and its contents, your drivers, and last but not least, the general public. It is for this reason that reliable cover is essential. Moreover, it is also important to have suitable insurance, otherwise unexpected occurrences, such as fire or theft, can cause major disruption which may have long term implications for your business.
However, you may have already found that getting suitable insurance for your courier vans a headache. The nature of the courier business means that your vans are out on the road everyday. To many insurance companies, this puts you at a higher risk of having an accident, for example, thus more likely to make a claim. Some insurance companies will therefore refuse to insure your vans…either that, or charge ridiculously high premiums!
However, recently, some insurance companies are breaking the mould, and adopting an opposing stance. They claim that couriers’ have more experience of the roads and are therefore less likely to have an accident or make a claim. It is with companies who have adopted this stance where you will find the cheapest premiums.
Courier van insurance, as with most vehicle insurance, offers varying levels of cover, the main three being third party, third party, fire and theft, and fully comprehensive. All of these usually have legal cover, meaning in the case of an accident, legal costs will be covered.
Fully comprehensive cover would have to be a must for courier vans though to ensure that your clients’ contents being transported in the vans are covered. This cover usually provides a courtesy van, which may prove invaluable to your business should one van be out of action for whatever reason. Third party fire and theft, for example, only covers the van itself and its fixtures and fittings if the are stolen or damaged in a fire.
