Arsenal's Gibbs out for three months

Arsenal left-back Kieran Gibbs faces three months on the sidelines after breaking his metatarsal in Tuesday's defeat of Standard Liege.

Arsene Wenger confirmed that the England under-21 star had fractured the first metatarsal on his left foot following a strong challenge from Standard's Eliaqium Mangala.

"Gibbs has a big hole in his leg," the Gunners boss said.

"It was a very bad challenge by the number 22 [Mangala] and it was not his first try, unfortunately. It doesn't look good for Gibbs."

Gibbs, elevated to the first team after regular left-back Gael Clichy suffered a stress fracture to his back, is undergoing surgery today and likely to be replaced by Armand Traore for Sunday's visit of Chelsea.

But Wenger had more positive news for Arsenal's two other injury worries from last night after William Gallas and Andrey Arshavin clashed heads trying to reach Cesc Fabregas' cross.

"Gallas has an ankle problem and a swollen eye. I think he will recover for Sunday, we hope so," Wenger said. "It wasn't concussion but he couldn't see anymore because his eye was swollen.

"Arshavin has some staples in his head. He will be available for Sunday."

Arsenal qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League last night after topping group H.

In the Premier League they can cut Chelsea's lead at the summit to five points and still retain a game in hand if they beat the Blues at the Emirates on Sunday.ADNFCR-8000010-ID-19478485-ADNFCR
