Asda 'to create 5,000 jobs in 2012'

Supermarket giant Asda is to open 25 new stores and three depots this year, creating 5,000 jobs in the process.
The retailer has announced plans for a new depot in Rochdale, while an exiting one in Falkirk will be replaced and a facility in South Elmsall in Yorkshire, which it recently bought from Netto, is to be revamped.
Asda is the UK's second biggest supermarket chain, behind Tesco, and is owned by the world's largest retailer, US firm Walmart.
The jobs created are to be part of a £500 million expansion drive, increasing the store's selling space by 600,000 square feet. According to the firm, the new depots will reduce the distance travelled by its delivery drivers by one million miles a year.
Asda has not yet released its Christmas trading report, but Tesco saw its shares fall 16 per cent after posting that it had been disappointed with its own trading over the festive period.

I hope most of the roles will be jobs for young people - too much youth unemployment will have effects that will last at least a generation if not more.
