Joe Worsley does not require surgery on his injured knee and could be fit for England's Six Nations opener against Wales, it has been confirmed.
The Wasps flanker was substituted just over a minute into England's 16-9 defeat to New Zealand last weekend and it was feared he faced a long lay-off.
But after undergoing tests, the 32-year-old's club have confirmed he does not need surgery, handing England coach Martin Johnson a note of positivity after a difficult autumn.
A statement from Worsley's club Wasps released on Friday said: "After a consultation with London Wasps' knee surgeon, Andy Williams, it has been decided by all parties that in preference of surgery, Joe will take a conservative approach to his rehab to repair the grade three medial collateral ligament injury to his right knee.
"Joe is expected to be out for a minimum period of eight weeks. London Wasps and the England medical team will continue to work together on Joe's recovery."
Worsley, a British Lion and member of the England World Cup squads in 1999, 2003 and 2007, could now be fit in time for England's first Six Nations match, with Wales visiting Twickenham on February 6th next year.
