Federer fight-back stuns Murray in London



Roger Federer came from behind to see off Andy Murray at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Murray had taken the first set after breaking serve twice, but Federer began to get on top with some aggressive play to win 3-6 6-3 6-1.

Federer came out on top in a gruelling opening rally, and he soon went on to earn two break points. The Swiss player netted the first, before a Murray error gave him the early break.

However, Murray hit straight back after his opponent netted twice to gift him two break-back points. Federer saved them both before a mis-hit Federer forehand gave him another break point, and he made no mistake with a crosscourt backhand close to the net.

Two Murray aces helped him to a 2-1 lead, before Federer held with ease to level the scores.

In the next game, a double fault from Murray made it 30-30, before a powerful forehand down the line gave him game point. However, Federer hit back with a well constructed point for deuce, but Murray held firm with two unreturnable serves for a 3-2 lead.

A Federer double fault and a long forehand gave Murray three break points. The world number one saved the first, but went wide with the second, to give Murray the break and a 4-2 lead.

Aggressive play from Federer saw him move 30-15 up on Murray's serve, before a shout from the crowd contributed to a Murray double fault and giving Federer two break points. Murray saved the first with a great first serve, and the second with a booming ace out wide. Murray saw out the game thanks to a Federer error and a 'Hollywood' smash for a 5-2 lead.

Federer held his next service game relatively comfortably to force Murray to serve out for the first set.

Two more aces from Murray gave him three set points, before he netted the first thanks to a deep return from Federer. Another double fault from Murray left him just one more set point, and a weak second serve was blasted down the line by Federer for deuce. An ace out wide gave him another set point and a over-hit Federer return gave Murray the first set.

Federer started the second set well with a love service game that was concluded with his first ace.

In the next game, a passing shot from Murray gave him a 30-15 lead, before Federer came out on top in a game of cat and mouse for 30-30 and another return from a weak second serve made it deuce.

A lucky net cord gave Federer a break point but Murray saved it with a deep second serve that Federer could only send long. Two deuces followed with Federer hitting two thunderous forehands to save game point, before two Federer errors finally brought Murray to 1-1 in the set, but Federer held again in a blink of an eye for 2-1.

Federer was starting to become increasingly aggressive and found himself at 30-30, before he went long with successive returns for 2-2, but Federer produced his third successive love service game for 3-2.

The world number one again found himself heavily involved in a Murray service game at 0-30, before Murray responded with a well executed point. However, a deep forehand and a volley earned him two break points, and he converted at the first time of asking with a stunning crosscourt forehand.

Murray soon found himself 0-30 up on Federer's serve as he looked for the break back, but Federer responded with a drop shot and an ace for 30-30, and he reached game point with another forehand winner, but he hit a backhand long for deuce. An unbelievable half volley on the bounce brought up game point for the second time before Murray netted to fall 5-2 behind.

Murray held for 5-3, leaving Federer to serve out for the second set, but the Scot created an opening at 15-30. However, two powerful first serves brought Federer set point but he went long with a lob for deuce. He brought up another set point on the next point, and Murray netted to send the match into a decider.

In the first game of the third set, Murray produced an early contender for shot of the tournament with a crosscourt backhand winner on the turn which helped him hold serve, before Federer held to love with a range of excellent shots.

A sixth double fault and wayward backhand saw Murray down 0-30 in the next game, and a weak forehand into the net handed Federer three break points. He saved the first two impressively, before another shot into the net handed Federer the break.

Federer consolidated the break for a 3-1 lead and then achieved the double break for 4-1 when Murray went long with a volley.

Two Federer aces helped him hold with ease again for a 5-1 lead, leaving Murray to serve to stay in the match.

Federer saw a match point come and go at 30-40, but created another one after a succession of deuces. He netted as Murray saved a second match point before Murray went wide with a backhand to give Federer his third match point, which Murray netted to fall to a defeat in a performance that promised so much early on.

Murray, who beat Juan Martin del Potro in his first match, plays his last round-robin game tomorrow afternoon against Fernando Verdasco, who was beaten by Federer in his opening match at the O2 Arena.ADNFCR-8000010-ID-19477813-ADNFCR
