Ferguson plays down Ferdinand injury fears

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has moved to play down fears Rio Ferdinand could remain out action for months due to injury.

Speaking ahead of United's clash with Everton tomorrow Sir Alex confirmed the defender would miss the game but said the 31-year-old should be back in action within two weeks.

"It is back related, he said, "We are putting a timescale on it, but it is not a situation where we are saying it will be months, it might be a couple of weeks or it might be a few weeks but that is it."

Ferguson is facing something of an injury crisis in his defence with Gary Neville suspended and Fabio da Silva out.

Jonny Evans is also a doubt after picking up an injury on international duty this week, while John O'Shea picked up a knock during Republic of Ireland's controversial defeat to France in their World Cup playoff.

The United boss said: "We're fighting hard to get Evans available, but he's not trained yet. We'll see how he goes today."

United may start the game against Everton with Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic in the centre of defence.

Following defeat to Chelsea two weeks ago, United currently lie in third place in the league, five points behind the west London club.ADNFCR-8000010-ID-19471123-ADNFCR
