Motorcyclists 'need to be careful' when using bus lanes

Transport for London's (TfL's) decision to allow motorcycle owners to use bus lanes in the capital on a permanent basis is likely to raise issues for those learning to ride a motorbike.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) noted the move will result in bike riders needing to take extra care once the changes come into effect on Monday January 23rd 2012.

While the action is likely to ease congestion and reduce CO2 emissions in the city, studies carried out by TfL and Ealing Council revealed motorcycle collision rates and the severity of the crashes might also increase.

Simon Best, chief executive of the IAM - which has more than 100,000 members from both the UK and abroad - observed responsible riders should find the alterations make it safer for them when travelling in a bus lane, but added: "The evidence does show two of the most vulnerable road user groups – motorcyclists and cyclists – will be at more risk."
