Online shoppers 'should know their rights'
People shopping online this Christmas have been urged to become more aware of their rights as consumers. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has stated that many people often face difficulties in returning clothes which were purchased both on the internet and in the high street.
According to the authority, its customer service department Consumer Direct has received more than 20,000 complaints for people who were initially unsuccessful while seeking a refund or exchange for their clothes purchases this year. The number of people with issues is expected to peak in January.
The OFT told online shoppers that they usually have seven working days from the day their purchases arrive to initiate the process of receiving a refund.
"Businesses need to be upfront about what they offer, but you can do your bit by keeping the receipt and making sure you understand your rights before you return the goods," said Michele Shambrook, from Consumer Direct.
Figures from the Interactive Media in Retail Group suggest that around £7.75 billion will be spent online between November 28th and New Year's Eve.
