Pets 'require post-Christmas health check'

Those looking into their pet insurance options at present might be wise to give their four-legged friend a health check, as new research has found many animals may require a quick review following the festive period.

Commissioned by Direct Line - which has been operating since 1985 - the study revealed one-third of dog owners in the UK treated their pooch to chocolate, biscuits and other snacks over yuletide, while 49 per cent of those questioned admitted to giving their hound an entire Christmas dinner.

In addition, seven per cent of respondents confessed their canine had eaten something from the Christmas tree.

Adam Whiteley, head of Direct Line pet insurance, noted: "We often neglect to increase the exercise levels for our pets, who may have also gorged on holiday treats."

The industry figure explained a dog's health can suffer from obesity in much the same way as a human's can, adding it is important for people to realise their animal may need to exercise more in order to burn off any weight they put on over the holiday season.
