Prince Harry 'could return to Afghanistan as helicopter pilot'

Prince Harry is expected to learn in the coming weeks whether he is to return to the frontline in Afghanistan, reports claim.

The 25-year-old, who was deployed to the country for ten weeks in 2007/08, could return as a helicopter pilot.

The prince has been training to become a pilot with the Army Air Corps for over a year and is due to learn soon whether he has been selected to fly Lynx helicopters in Afghanistan.

Prince Harry said last year he saw flying the Lynx as the best way to return to the frontline.

"I'm really enjoying it [pilot training] and, as everyone knows, it's my easiest way of getting back to the front line. Maybe safer, maybe not, I don't know," he said last June.

"To get out to Afghanistan again would be fantastic and my best chance is to do it from a helicopter."

A military source quoted by the Sun newspaper said the chances of Prince Harry seeing his wish granted were high.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, however, declared: "Lt Harry Wales could fly Apache or Lynx helicopters if he successfully completes the Army Pilots Course.

"Which aircraft he flies will depend on his progress, manning requirements and his preferences."

The prince's previous deployment to Afghanistan was cut short after the international media reported his presence on the frontline, sparking fears for his and his colleagues' safety.
