Queen drops in at Manchester wedding

By Jamie Smith

A happy couple who got married yesterday were given a surprise when the Queen dropped in to wish them well.

Frances and John Canning got wed at Manchester Town Hall and were informed a few weeks ago that they would be sharing the venue with a special guest.

The Queen was in Manchester as part of her Diamond Jubilee UK tour, opening the Media City complex and hospitals across the city.

Groom John told the Manchester Evening News the couple wrote to the Queen when they found out she would also be at the Town Hall on their wedding day.

But they were shocked when she dropped in to wish them well, along with husband Prince Philip and assorted dignitaries who were accompanying the royal couple.

"The Queen asked how we were feeling and congratulated us. Prince Philip was asking where in Italy we were going for our honeymoon," said John.

Queen Elizabeth II is travelling the UK this year to mark the 60th anniversary of her coronation, with destinations on the tour schedule including the Isle of Wight.

This only shows that the Queen has a great personality and when an opportunity arises she doesn’t hesitate to show it. I am so glad that she has been traveling around the country and other members of the Royal family have been promoting the Diamond Jubilee in the Commonwealth. . The bond between Canada and Queen Elizabeth has always been very strong and the jubilee is a great opportunity to celebrate her life as well as the values that we and the British have in common.
