United make shock Owen bid

Manchester United have made a surprise move to sign out-of-contract Newcastle United striker Michael Owen, according to reports.

Speculation that is so far unconfirmed by the player's representatives or the respective clubs suggests Owen has emerged as a target for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Despite having previously played for the Red Devils' bitter rivals Liverpool, Owen, 29, is thought to be in favour of the move, which could help to kick-start his floundering career.

Having sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80 million, Ferguson has already begun spending his windfall with the purchase of Wigan Athletic winger Antonio Valencia for an estimated £16 million.

Ferguson is still in pursuit of options up front to compensate for Ronaldo's departure, and missing out on signing loanee Carlos Tevez on a permanent deal earlier this summer.

Tevez would have cost United £25 million, while other reported targets for the club have included Valencia's David Villa at more than £30 million and Lyon's Karim Benzema at a similar price.

However, Owen would represent an excellent piece of business - despite his poor record of form and fitness since he moved to Tyneside four years ago - as he is available on a free transfer from the Championship club.

According to the latest reports, Owen could undergo a medical at Old Trafford as soon as this morning before finalising his move before the weekend.
