Expert highlights the importance of profiles

Top Tips

A leading US relationships scribe offered her top seven tips for anyone planning on using an online dating service on Wednesday (November 19th).

Elizabeth Aloni, Chicago relationships examiner, has explained in an article on examiner.com that formulating an online profile is a crucial aspect of the experience.

She notes that while it is the first point of call for anyone who may be a potential match, a profile is "more than just a way to meet people online".

She writes on the website: "It is a declaration to the world of who you are, what you want in a relationship and how much you think you can have it.

"It is your vision of the relationship that you want to attract so be mindful about what you write."

So with this in mind, Ms Aloni begins to divulge her seven key areas for people using online dating websites to consider when putting together such a personal collection of information.

Firstly, she suggests making a list of the things which are non-negotiable to give a possible match a crystal clear picture - in other words, anything without which you would not be happy in a relationship.

In addition, she advises asking close friends and family for their opinions on what your unique qualities and mannerisms are so that the profile can be made to stand out from the thousands clogging up dating sites.

Ms Aloni also champions the value of being specific in order to convey a message of who you really are and not just a bland collection of words with a blurry picture.

The example she cites is the fact that most people will include something like 'I like to travel', whereas a more detailed account of a recent excursion, for instance, could be more beneficial.

This concept is expanded further as she explains that "less is more", in the sense that it is better to be selective about what is included and to write about it in a wider and deeper fashion.

The next area Ms Aloni addresses is the use of the word 'we' when describing how you envisage a relationship as it makes a profile far more inviting.

She explains: "For example, instead of saying 'My ideal relationship is one where he/she is kind, thoughtful, intelligent, romantic…', say 'We love being thoughtful of one another and find kindness to be the greatest accomplishment. We find romance in the little things like a love note or holding hands while watching TV'."

The sixth area to be highlighted is the value of being honest as it is a chance to clarify exactly what you want from the online dating experience and "this is not the time to worry what other people want to hear".

Finally, Ms Aloni talks up the possibility of enlisting a relationship coach in order to sharpen the focus and drive necessary to achieve objectives, while also helping you overcome fears and obstacles.

She comments: "If creating a relationship is your goal, why not surround yourself with the support that can enhance and accelerate your success?"

There is no doubt that online dating can often be a misleading and disappointing experience, but it seems that by maximising the efficiency of your personal input and contribution, such scenarios can be reduced dramatically.
